U-505 Restoration and Relocation Project
  • In 2004, the Tawani Foundation awarded the Museum of Science and Industry a Preservation Grant of $400,000 for the renovation of the U505 Exhibit. The U505 is a German Submarine that was captured by American troops off the coast of West Africa on June 4, 1944. The exhibit, which opened in June 2005, is a monument in honor of all the seamen who lost their lives sailing the seas during World War I and World War II. The final payment on this grant was made in 2007. The Tawani Foundation and the Museum of Science and Industry share the common goal of preserving this important piece of history for future generations in a permanent and educational home.

With a generous gift to the Museum of Science and Industry's U-505 Submarine exhibit, the Tawani Foundation has helped us educate and engage hundreds of thousands of guests and students in the dramatic story behind the capture of the U-505—the only the only German submarine in the United States, and, now, a national memorial to the 55,000 American sailors who gave their lives on the high seas in WWI and WWII. Future generations will be inspired by the history and science of this famous U-boat, thanks to the incredible support of the Tawani Foundation and our other generous donors. David R. Mosena, President and CEO of the Museum of Science and Industry
